UpdatedAug 27, 2011 12:29 AM ETWith the towels collected off the floor and wads of dirty tapetossed toward the garbage, Charles Tillman wondered aloud about howthe Bears had let the NFC title game getaway from them.It was late on Jan. 23 and Tillman was ready to race the last ofthe stragglers out of the dressing room.He described the defeat as best he could, and shook his headfrequently. Finally, he stood up at his locker and concluded by saying,”We’ll be back next year. Our defense will have another yeartogether. We’ll be a year older with another year ofexperience.”And those words have stuck ever since. Yes, they will haveanother year of experience, but the part about being a year olderis what resonates.Tillman wasn’t suggesting the Bears would be old, but the realityis the Bears’ defense is a year older in aleague where the beatings add up and the injuries are morecontinuous than annoying.By all rights, the Bears’ defense ought to be verysolid again this year, the one part of the team with which you canrest easy. But there’s that age thing. After the Bears were so unbelievably fortunatea year ago with injuries, you have to think it’s going to even outa bit this year.Brian Urlacher is 33, Anthony Adams 31, Julius Peppers 31, LanceBriggs 31 (in November), Israel Idonije 31 (in November), Tillman30 and Chris Harris 29.That’s seven starters right around the age in the NFL whenthings can turn against you, and already Lovie Smith has beencautious with Adams and Briggs because of injuries he says mightkeep them out the rest of the preseason. The Bears obviously have the personnelon defense, enough even to make up for a questionable secondary, but age and injuries have to scare them as they do every team.Thing is, the Bears were lucky last year and itjust doesn’t figure to happen again, and if the doctor visits thedefense often this formula doesn’t work. The offense is going to be the offense dependent again onshakyprotection for Jay Cutler and the special teams have to be thespecial teams, better than most in the NFL.But it’s tough to imagine this a playoff squad without thedefense winning games for the Bears. Injuries are already hereand the opener is two weeks away. Time to cross your fingers andhold your breath.”We’ll be a year older,” Tillman said after the final game oflast season.Hard to argue with him.Upon further reviewWhen he got here, we were told Roy Williams was a No. 1 receiverwho had a perfect handle on the Mike Martz playbook, and now wehear he’s still learning the finer points of the offense. Andaccording to Jay Cutler, “I don’t think we expect Roy to be thegreatest receiver ever. He’s going to fill a role.”Just managingMike Quade has taken a lot of heat this week for letting BobbyValentine manage his team from the booth, and for being unaware inregards to his own players. That’s a bit unfair because Quade has been unaware from thestart, and Bob Brenly has outmanaged him from the booth allseason.Oddest momentTwo outs, bottom of the ninth, man on second and down a runTuesday and Brenly wonders why Quade is saving Tony Campana, whosemain job is as a pinch runner.TV camera then shows the dugout, where Campana and his teammatesare staring at Quade, wondering exactly the same thing.Luckily for Quade, Tyler Colvin struck out and Aramis Ramirezdidn’t have a chance to be thrown out at home on a single.Breaking newsYou know what will really be a story? When someone reports thatRoy Williams didn’t drop a pass in practice.Law and orderMiami Herald’s Greg Cote, on Jim Thome’s 600th career homer:”Been awhile since baseball marked a milestone by a man not facinga federal indictment.”The mentorE-mailer Dan Marich: “Thank goodness Aramis Ramirez has takenStarlin Castro under his wing. I feel so much better now.”Just thinkingNow that the White Sox have packed it in for the season, someoneplease tell Ozzie Guillen that he doesn’t have to play Adam Dunn orAlex Rios the rest of the way.Just askingShould we be worried that it’s only the preseason and LovieSmith already is searching the sky for that elusive spaceship?Best headlineSportspickle.com: “Miami expected to be acquitted indeath-penalty case by a Florida jury.”International debtOrlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi, on the Georgetown brawl with aChinese pro team: “Don’t know if the Georgetown guys destroyed anyproperty, but if so I’m sure President Obama will tell the Chinesegovernment, ‘Just put it on our tab.’ “And finally …Omaha World-Herald’s Brad Dickson: “In Woodward, Okla., a womanstripped off all her clothes during a putting contest. In a relatedstory, Tiger Woods announced he’s skipping next year’s PGAChampionship to enter the Woodward, Okla., Putt-For-DoughChallenge.”brozner@dailyherald.com* Listen to Barry Rozner from 9 a.m. to noon Sundays on theScore’s “Hit and Run” show at WSCR 670-AM.Follow him @BarryRozner on Twitter.

UpdatedAug 27, 2011 12:30 AM ETAfter a significant decrease in employing the no-huddle offenselast year, the Steelers may dust it off againstAtlanta on Saturday to the delight of quarterback BenRoethlisberger.”I love it, and so do the wide receivers,” Roethlisberger said.”I like the change of pace. I like the up-tempo, and it`s hard forthe defense to substitute.”The Steelers ran the offense morefrequently two years ago compared to last year. That was because ofyoung receivers such as Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and EmmanuelSanders, along with having a lot of new starting offensive linemen, including rookie center Maurkice Pouncey. With the receivers more acclimated to the offense and Pounceyemerging as a Pro Bowler, the return of the no-huddle could be aregular part of the game plan.Roethlisberger said he would like to see the offense pick upwhere it left off in last week`s 24-14 victory over the Eagles, with the added wrinkle of the no-huddle.”We want to establish ourselves and what we want to do,”Roethlisberger said. “We may go some no-huddle, and if we do that, then I would like to execute that well.”• Steelers coach Mike Tomlin wouldonly rule out cornerback Ike Taylor for tomorrow`s game. He isstill recovering from a broken thumb. Cornerback Cortez Allen(hamstring), cornerback Bryant McFadden (hamstring), wide receiverJerricho Cotchery (hamstring), wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders(foot) and left tackle Jonathan Scott (knee) are listed asquestionable.”Anybody else other than those names should consider themselvesin and be ready to rock and roll,” Tomlin said.• Tomlin said he will have the first units playa series in the second half, “then, we will play it by ear fromthere.”• The Steelers will have trim the rosterfrom 90 to 75 by Tuesday. They likely will make the movesSunday.A lot of players won`t have an opportunity to show the coacheswhat they can do during tomorrow`s preseason game, with thestarters expected to take up a good bit of the snaps. But ifcertain players do survive the first cut, they will play a lotduring Thursday`s final preseason game at Carolina.”It is tough, because those guys don`t get to play a lot and ifyou make it through this week, then you get all the reps,” safetyRyan Clark said. “The advice I have is to soak up every moment andtake advantage of every moment. If you have an opportunity to rundown on special teams, then you do that 100 percent.”• Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel visitedthe Steelers` facility yesterday andwatched practice. Tressel was a guest of director of footballoperations Kevin Colbert.• Rookie running back Baron Batch is no longerusing crutches one week after undergoing ACL surgery. Batch isstill on the active roster, but he likely will be placed on injuredreserve this weekend.

UpdatedAug 27, 2011 12:31 AM ETIt’s like Christmas Eve in August. The Jets-Giants annual preseason matchuptomorrow night has been more hyped since Rex Ryan bellowed intotown. The Jets head coach has made it a priority for the Jets to beNew York’s top football team, and his players have helped back uphis claims with back-to-back trips to the AFC ChampionshipGame.”We have pride, too. We don’t want to play second-fiddle toanybody,” former Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody, who retiredbefore the season and now works as an ESPN analyst, said. “Ourwhole thing was, why should we be step-child to another team oranything that. So, that’s thing Rex sent home from thebeginning:’This is going to our town, our city.’ That’s really the mantrawe took on when Rex got here. And I think Rex has done a good jobof building up the organization or fan base.” There was a heatedbuildup to last season’s preseason matchup when the Jets and Giants owners bickered over whowould play the first game in the New Meadowlands Stadium. The compromise was that the two teams would move up their annualpreseason matchup, which is usually played in the third week, tothe opener and during the regular season’s first week the Giants played on Sunday afternoonand the Jets on Monday night. The preseason meeting leftquarterback Eli Manning bloodied, but the Giants backups rallied for a 31-16win.Still, former Giants QB Phil Simms said thepreseason matchups of today between the local teams don’t comeclose the intensity saw when he came into the league in 1979.I think it’s deader than ever,” Simms, CBS’ lead NFL analyst, said.”I don’t think you can have a preseason rivalry anymore. It used to be kind of special. I remember playing in it earlierin my career and it was worse than a regular season game. You played the whole game and it was the fourth game. It’s losta lot of steam. If it doesn’t count, then the interest just isn’tthere. And the biggest thing is the agenda for the coaches andteams have played so much through the years.” This year’s preseasonmatchup will serve as a preview for the teams’ Dec. 24, Week 16showdown, which could be rife with playoff implications.”I did play them in 1993 and we beat them (10-6) and that was abig deal because it was a regular season game and we beat them asthe road team,” CBS studio analyst and former Jets QB BoomerEsiason said. “When they play on Dec. 24 that will be a huge game. That will be like the Subway Series, both teams should be in theplayoff hunt. They’ll be playing for something that night.” For now it givesthe Giants a chance to show they canovercome a turbulent preseason, which took its latest negative turnwith the season-ending ACL tear of top cornerback TerrellThomas. It will be Plaxico Burress’ second preseason game with the Jetsafter he scored a touchdown in his preseason debut Sunday nightagainst the Bengals in his first game in more than two years. Itwill be the first time that Burress will go against his formerteam, which was interested in bringing him back after he spent timein prison for shooting himself in the leg with an unlicensedhandgun.”I think Plaxico fits the Jets team really well,” Simmssaid.”The speed with Santonio Holmes, with Derrick Mason they havegreat route-running and all the other stuff. They have a tight end,a great running game and now they have the size receiver. I have toadmit – still a lot has to fall in place – but it’s a great blendfor the Jets, no doubt.”JETS vs. GIANTS Saturday, 7 p.m. NBC

UpdatedAug 27, 2011 4:10 AM ETINDIANAPOLIS (AP)Reggie Wayne spoke up to defend Curtis Painter, thendramatically backed up his words.Wayne was offended when the Colts brought Kerry Collins out ofretirement to back up injured quarterback Peyton Manning andpossibly start if Manning isn’t ready for the opener.Wayne believes Painter’s knowledge of Indianapolis’ complexoffense gives the team its best chance to win games if Manning’sneck isn’t fully healed in the next few weeks. Wayne sounded off onCollins’ acquisition Wednesday and promised he would go all out tohelp Painter.”I’m going balls to the walls for him, man,” Wayne said. ”I’mnot going to let anybody just come in here. I don’t care who youare. I mean I’m not going to let anyone just come in here and justpush someone aside like you’re that dog now, you know what I mean.I’m sure Curtis is thinking it, and if he’s not thinking it, I’lltake the challenge for him.”Wayne caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in thesecond quarter Friday night in a 24-21 loss to the Green BayPackers. A look of satisfaction crossed his face when asked aboutPainter’s performance.”You kind of want to go out there and make plays for him, togive him that confidence,” Wayne said. ”He did a good job.”Painter said he appreciated Wayne’s words of encouragement.”I think it makes you feel good,” Painter said. ”That’s kindof what you go for, is to have confidence from the guys around you,the coaching staff, other players.”Collins, a 16-year veteran with more than 40,000 yards passing, didn’t take Wayne’s comments personally.”We’ve had several conversations,” Collins said. ”I saw whatReggie said. I didn’t take offense to that. If anything, he’ssticking up for his teammate, and I respect that.”Team general manager Chris Polian said management wasn’tconcerned about Wayne’s comments.”I don’t think anybody blinked at that,” Polian told TheAssociated Press. ”Reggie is a true pro. He is a very proudplayer, a very good performer and equally good as a teammate. So Idon’t think anybody in this organization blinked at hiscomments.”Though Painter had a big game, Green Bay backup Graham Harrellprovided the fireworks that decided the outcome.Harrell led Green Bay to a staggering 11 points in the final 35seconds. He took advantage of two Colts’ defensive penalties and,on fourth-and-10 from the Colts 11, he scrambled and found rookietight end Ryan Taylor for the TD pass. Harrell connected withTaylor again for the 2-point conversion to tie it. After Green Bayrecovered the onside kick, Harrell moved the Packers (2-1) intoposition for Mason Crosby’s 50-yard field goal as time expired.Things started well for the Packers.Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers took Green Bay 81 yards on itssecond series and finished it with an 18-yard TD pass to JermichaelFinley over the arms of linebacker Pat Angerer. Green Bay went 61yards on its next series, and Crosby’s 26-yard field goal made it10-0 early in the second quarter. It looked as if it would be another disappointing outing forPainter. On his first three series, Painter completed 1 of 5 passesfor 7 yards before everything suddenly clicked.Painter led the Colts into field goal range before AdamVinatieri missed a 39-yard field goal. Painter came right back onthe next possession, exploited a blown coverage and found Waynedown the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown.”That would never happen in the regular season,” Wayne said.”I would never have that easy of a touchdown. But right now, we’lltake it. Touchdown Colts.”On the Colts’ next series, Painter ran the 2-minute drill toperfection, He threaded 36-yard pass down the right sideline toPierre Garcon, then lobbed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Chris Brooksin the left corner of the end zone to give Indy a 14-10 lead.”Getting in those situations and getting some things right, that meant a lot,” Painter said.Painter fumbled on Indy’s first possession of the third quarterand he didn’t return. He already had left an impression.”I think he did good,” Wayne said. ”He came out tonight, dida good job. He responded well. He took everything in stride, andthat’s what he’s been doing since I’ve known him.”Painter is uncertain about his future with the Colts.”I don’t have a whole lot of control over any of thosedecisions,” he said. ”Hopefully, I’ll just continue to put myselfin position to help the team.”Notes: Green Bay’s starters played one half, while the Coltspulled their starters early in the third quarter. … Colts ProBowl defensive end Robert Mathis left in the first quarter with ahamstring injury. … Collins was dressed in his familiar No. 5jersey. Rookie punter Travis Baltz, who was wearing No. 5, switchedto No. 2. … Receivers Greg Jennings and Randall Cobb were among11 Packers to sit out. Both have bruised knees. … In addition toplaying without Manning, the Colts were missing defensive captainGary Brackett, Pro Bowl safety Antoine Bethea and receivers AustinCollie and Anthony Gonzalez.—Follow Cliff Brunt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/cliffbruntap

Saints Chris Ivory Replica Jersey

UpdatedAug 27, 2011 5:54 PM ETOAKLAND, Calif. (AP)There are plenty of questions about the Oakland Raiders defenseafter being shredded by big pass plays by Arizona and gashed by therun by San Francisco in the first two exhibition games. With Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints coming to town Sundaynight for what is considered a regular season dress rehearsal, theRaiders know they will be exposed on national television if theyhaven’t solved those problems.”This is probably the best test that we can get playing againsta tremendous offensive football team with a quarterback that Ithink is one of the best in football,” coach Hue Jackson said.”It’s a great test for our football team.”With starters usually getting their most extensive playing timeof the preseason, the third exhibition game is often viewed as thebest gauge for where a team stands heading into the season.Rarely has that game predicted what was to come better than itwas two years ago when New Orleans came to Oakland and dismantledthe Raiders 45-7. The Saints went on to win their first 13 regularseason games and then the Super Bowl a little more than five monthslater, topping 40 points in four of the first six contests. The Raiders, on the other hand, went on to their NFL-worstseventh straight season of at least 11 losses, with five of thoselosses coming by at least 20 points. In the game two years ago, Brees completed 14 of 17 passes for179 yards and drove the Saints to touchdowns on all three drives heplayed. The offense clicked so well that coach Sean Payton pulledmost of his starters early in the second quarter instead of playingthem into the third quarter as planned.”They’re obviously a much better team than they were two yearsago,” Brees said. “I feel like we have the ability to be a betterteam than we were two years ago. That’s our goal, to build thisteam and develop young players. We just want to play well. If wewalk away from that Oakland game and we play well … it makes youfeel like we have a chance to play well and continue growing inthat first game.”Mark Brunell led a pair of touchdown drives after that as theSaints took a 31-0 halftime lead, outgaining Oakland 344-60 in thefirst two quarters.Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt needed little reminding thisweek about what happened two years ago and said he views this gameas a good barometer for what’s to come this season.”This is definitely going to be a test to see where we are, mentally, physically, just as a whole defense, offense,” Routtsaid. “It’s going to show a little bit of where you’re going to beable to start the season.”The Saints have split their first two exhibition games withvastly different defensive performances. New Orleans used anaggressive, blitzing defense to beat San Francisco 24-3 in theopener before giving up 436 yards in a 27-14 loss at Houston lastweek.New Orleans is looking for a bounce-back performance in what maybe the last opportunity for many starters to play thispreseason.”The Raiders have a great running game, so that’s a great earlytest for us,” linebacker Will Herring said. “For me personally, anywhere I’m lining up, my goal has to be to stop their run. We’regoing to get a good barometer of where we are right now.”Payton said he plans to play his starters on both sides of theball for the entire first half and then possibly play one unit alittle bit in the third quarter depending on how the game playedout.Jackson hasn’t committed to how much his starters will play andeven which ones will see the field. Oakland was without some keyoffensive players in losses to Arizona and San Francisco to openthe preseason, including star running back Darren McFadden (brokenorbital bone) and big-play receiver Jacoby Ford (broken hand). Both players returned to practice this week but Jackson mightnot want to risk injuries with them. Oakland also will be withoutkey receivers Louis Murphy and Chaz Schilens and tight end KevinBoss. Quarterback Jason Campbell, who left last week’s game earlyafter getting kneed in the helmet, is expected to play. This game should provide a stiff test to some of Oakland’s youngcornerbacks, who have been struggling this summer. With All ProNnamdi Asomugha gone to free agency and starter Chris Johnson hurt, rookies DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa and second-year playersWalter McFadden and Jeremy Ware have gotten plenty of opportunitiesthis preseason. They have struggled in practice and the two games, allowing 297yards passing to Arizona in the exhibition opener. Facing Brees andone of the NFL’s most sophisticated pass offenses will be a stifftest for the Raiders unproven cornerbacks.”If somebody catches a ball on you early, it’s no reason to getdown,” Routt said. “I’ll leave that to you guys to go ahead andcriticize everybody. It’s just football. You’ll never see a gamewhere there are no balls caught by a receiver, and you’ll never seea game where there’s not one pass completed by a quarterback.”—AP Sports Writer Greg Beacham in Oxnard, Calif., contributed tothis report.

UpdatedAug 23, 2011 7:06 PM ETNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)The Tennessee Titans are enjoying their fresh start very much inthe post-Vince Young and Jeff Fisher era.Gone are the drama and distractions along with the quarterbackand coach after a 5-2 start disintegrated into a 6-10 collapse in2010. That led to the decision to release Young three weeks beforethe team parted with Fisher, the only head coach this franchise hadknown since his promotion in November 1994 while the team was stillthe Houston Oilers.Owner Bud Adams stayed in-house for his new coach, promotingMike Munchak from offensive line assistant and choosing a man whohas been with the team since 1982, when the Oilers drafted him inthe first round out of Penn State. And Munchak wants to winnow.”The beauty of the NFL is you can go from 6-10 like we did lastyear to winning it all, so why not us?” Munchak said.Munchak surrounded himself with a mix of assistants, includinghis former Oilers teammate Jerry Gray as his defensive coordinatorand the experienced Chris Palmer to oversee the offense. The Titansrestocked at quarterback first by drafting Jake Locker out ofWashington at No. 8 overall, then signing veteran Matt Hasselbeckto a three-year contract.”In my mind, there’s a great running game, great offensiveline, good pass call, talented wide receivers, great running back, good defense,” Hasselbeck said of his decision to come toTennessee. ”I mean it’s perfect.”Adams, who turns 89 in January, didn’t stop spending moneythere. The Titans loaded up on defenders in the draft led by linebackerAkeem Ayers out of UCLA. Once the lockout ended, they signedveteran tackle Shaun Smith and middle linebacker Barrett Ruud, while adding experience in the secondary with safeties JordanBabineaux and Anthony Smith, and cornerback Frank Walker. Those moves are meant to improve a defense that ranked 26th intotal yards allowed per game in 2010 and 29th against the pass. They also added veteran tight end Daniel Graham along withlinemen Adam Terry and Pat McQuistan. Graham said he chose theTitans because he sees plenty of talent and potential despite thefact Munchak was the eighth and final head coach hired for thisseason.”It’s been a crazy offseason, but it’s nothing we can do aboutit,” Graham said. ”A lot of people are in the same spot. We justhave to adapt and keep it going.”The Titans’ lone problem – hardly a small one – has been ChrisJohnson’s holdout. The Titans are ready to make him thehighest-paid running back ever, but Johnson wants to be one of theNFL’s highest paid players. In other words, quarterback money.Munchak remains hopeful Johnson will be back by the opener Sept.11 at Jacksonville. The coach said Johnson can contribute rightfrom the start if he’s with the team.”We need him here to be part of this thing for us to reach ourgoals,” Munchak said. The new coach also is waiting to see if NFL Commissioner RogerGoodell suspends receiver Kenny Britt for two arrests in New Jerseyduring the lockout. Britt met with Goodell on Tuesday. The Titans are embracing Munchak’s new rules and his message ofone team.Televisions, game systems and big stereos are no longer allowedin the locker room, where players often camped out battling eachother, and the players’ lounge has been stocked with comfyrecliners. Hats aren’t allowed in the building either.Accountability is the buzzword, and fullback Ahmard Hall said theyknow Munchak will keep players who want to do right so they canwin.”I see a united team, and that’s not so much what we’ve seenfrom the past,” Hall said. ”We’ve seen a lot of the individualstuff going on, a lot of distractions. What I’m seeing now is avery united team. The defense is connected with the offense. We’rethe Tennessee Titans instead of the offense and defense and guysdoing their own things.”That alone could help a team that has had a six-game skid eachof the past two seasons.Quarterback was the biggest offseason question. Now Hasselbeckis expected to start, though he is being pushed by Locker, whosepoise, leadership and accuracy have been impressive early on.”It definitely gives us a 2 1/2-mile start from where we wouldbe were he not here,” linebacker Will Witherspoon said ofHasselbeck. The Titans need that passing threat to free up Johnson. Hefollowed his 2,006-yard rushing season by running for 1,364 yardsin 2010 when opponents stacked the line of scrimmage, daringTennessee to beat them through the air. Tennessee couldn’t andranked 17th in yards rushing, 25th in yards passing.Receivers Britt and Nate Washington, along with tight end JaredCook, give Hasselbeck the weapons to do that.”We have all the tools, and I think it’s all up from here,”Cook said. ”Success is in our tunnel vision.”

UpdatedAug 24, 2011 12:25 AM ETIt looks like “Ground and Pound” might be scrap-heapbound forthe Jets.Gang Green showed a penchant for passing Sunday night againstthe Bengals, a departure from its personality in coach Rex Ryan’sfirst two years. Ryan has been talking about throwing the ballmore, and it looked as if that’s the plan. With the starters in the game, the Jets threw the ball 20 times versusonly 11 runs, operating mainly out of threereceiver sets. Theoffense thrived with new addition Plaxico Burress in his firstgame, raising expectations for what Mark Sanchez and Co. cando.”I think this offense can really be special,” said Burress, whocaught three passes for 66 yards and a TD in his Jets’ debut. “I want this offense togo out and score as many points as we can. We have a great defense. We all know that. I’m challenging our offense to go out and score28, 30 points a week. I believe that’s something we can do.” Lastyear, the Jets averaged 22.9 points per game,13th best in the NFL. The Jets expect more with the additionof Burress, plus another year in the system for receiver SantonioHolmes, another year of maturation for Sanchez and the addition ofDerrick Mason in the slot.Evaluating Sunday’s preseason performance is tough consideringhow poorly the Bengals looked at times, but the Jets have to be encouraged with whatthey saw after some early stumbles.Sanchez connected with favorite target Dustin Keller four times, hit Burress with a beautiful back-shoulder throw and connected withboth Burress and Holmes on touchdowns.”I think sky’s the limit for this group,” Sanchez said.”I know they’ll go as I’ll go, and it’s a matter of me gettingcompletions and being efficient, getting the ball on them, and thenevery once in a while when they need to make a play and make thequarterback right, either a one-handed grab or a grab in doublecoverage, that’s what they’ll do. They have that kind ofconfidence, they have that big-game experience to know how to dothat. But it doesn’t matter who we have at wideout, thequarterback’s got to be good, so that’s my goal.”The Jets’ rushing attack looked awfulSunday. With starter Shonn Greene sidelined, LaDainian Tomlinsonmustered just 16 yards on nine carries. The offensive line bearsmost of the blame for failing to open holes. The Jets still believe they can run theball, but Ryan feels throwing the ball more is the naturalprogression for the offense with Sanchez now in his thirdseason.Sanchez completed 12-of20 passes for 173 yards and twotouchdowns against the Bengals. He made some really nice throws, especially considering the driving rain the game was played in. The24-year-old knows how much is riding on his shoulders.”[The organization is] doing everything they can [to help me],and they’ve done it each and every year,” Sanchez said. “Last year, they brought in some bigtime players in Santonio. And now [Braylon Edwards is] gone, but we’ve got Plax, we’ve gotDerrick Mason, and we’re ready to play. It’s amazing to see what[general manager] Mike Tannenbaum can do in an offseason, whetherit’s on offense or defense, and it’s good. It’s going to work outwell, so it’s my job to make it work.” Holmes, who had threecatches for 19 yards and a TD, believes the receiving corps andSanchez are already clicking.”We’re all veterans and we’ve been playing this game for a longtime,” Holmes said. “[It's] just trust. Gaining trust right now isa big issue for us, and I think it’s there.Mark doesn’ t have any issues with trusting myself or Plaxico tobe where we’re supposed to be or throwing the ball, and I think itbuilds great chemistry from there.”

UpdatedAug 24, 2011 12:26 AM ETThe National Football League has a problem. It has friends inlow places. Some of those friends showed up Saturday night atCandlestick Park. They turned the parking lot and some parts of thestadium into a fight club and combat zone. This was very bad. But don’t buy the notion that this wasisolated to a Raiders-49ers matchup. You can endthe annual preseason game between the two teams which will happenat least temporarily, according to a Monday announcement and itstill does not solve the problem. How do I know? Because I have seen too much, in too many otherplaces. Maybe not shootings in parking lots (what kind of peoplebring guns to football games, anyway?). But other bad stuff.I have been to New England where a grown man, obviouslyinebriated, decided to urinate on my rental car tires, just minutesafter I pulled into the parking lot. At a Philadelphia Eagles homegame, I have seen bottle rockets and cherry bombs fly through theair above the stadium as fights broke out in the seats. In 2004, aman was beaten unconscious in the stands at a San Diego Chargershome game. This is why it is wrong to focus solely on last Saturday’sidiocy. Authorities have reacted to it. Measures have beenimplemented. I would wager that there will be far less mayhem atthis weekend’s home 49er and Raider exhibition games. But therewill still be issues. The most frequent complaint I hear from average fans who attendNFL games, here and elsewhere, is that they end up sitting in asection where loudmouth, drunk guys are insulting other fansusually from the opposing team–and often trying to provoke afight.”I won’t take my kids to a game,” these people tell me so oftenthat I hear the words even before they are spoken. There’s a story about one Raiders-49ers game at the OaklandColiseum several years ago where the 49er team bus was entering theparking lot and quarterback Steve Young noticed a fan wearing hisred No. 8 jersey.”That guy,” Young told his seatmate on the bus, “is going to gethit today more than I will.”Is the NFL proud of that? It is probably true that Saturdaynight’s troublemakers were not season ticket holders and insteadbought seats cheap on the secondary market. It is surely true thatthey were bringing ugly baggage from outside the stadium that ledto the violence, whatever that ugly baggage was. But think aboutthis: Why did they choose to bring it to a NFL game instead ofsomewhere else? The bottom line is, if you plan to stage an event where peoplecan drink all afternoon in a parking lot before going inside todrink some more. . . well, then you are operating one of theworld’s biggest bars, not merely an athletic contest. That’s not against the law. Banning alcohol is an impracticalsolution. Alcohol is part of the economic engine for allprofessional sports. Plus, plenty of folks (including me) enjoyhaving a beer or two at games. But if someone is operating a hugebar, then it needs to be run like a huge bar. If that meansbouncers to keep order, a parking lot patrol to evict misbehavingtailgaters, plus breathalyzer tests before fans enter the stadium,so be it.And yes, I’m serious.Monday, the 49ers and San Francisco officials did their best tomove the needle toward a better and safer atmosphere atCandlestick. The cops announced there will be DUI checkpointsoutside Candlestick after every 49er home date. Alcohol sales willbe stopped in the fourth quarter or earlier. Parking lots will notopen until four hours before kickoff. Tailgating will be bannedonce a game begins. It’s still not enough.Responsible bars do not serve drunk people. Why not abreathalyzer test at the Candlestick or O.co Coliseum gates? Noteveryone would receive one. It would be similar to an airportsecurity setup.Already, each ticket holder receives a pat-down for weaponsand/or bottles. Why couldn’t the pat-down person also do a quickfive-second inventory of whether the ticket holder (A) smells andacts tipsy and (B) looks like trouble. If so, the person could besent to a separate line for a separate screening that includes abreathalyzer reading at a stipulated level to be determined. Overthe limit? Your ticket is confiscated.I ran my idea by Ted Atlas, a man I respect as much as anyone onthe issues of football spectator safety and crowd control. He’sworked security at 49er and Raider games for the last quartercentury, as well as at 24 Super Bowls. He has also authored ahistory book about Candlestick Park (full disclosure: I wrote theforeword) and knows the place inside and out.Atlas was in the command control center Saturday night. Hedoesn’t want to talk yet about what happened in detail.Investigations aren’t complete. But he’s not sure about institutingbreathalyzer bouncers. He worries it might slow down the crowdentry flow.”Things have to be adjusted,” Atlas said. “You don’t want tooverreact. I think the 49ers have taken many precautions in tryingto make Candlestick a nice experience for people who go to gamesthere. But you can only control people’s behavior so much.”Atlas agreed with me that something weird has happened in profootball over the past 15 or 20 years. A perception has beencreated that NFL games are just about the greatest places ever togo and drink alcohol before and during games while screaming ateach other not at players, at other fans every weekend. Perhapsit’s because of imagery embraced by the league, by those “All MyRowdy Friends” song videos before Monday Night telecasts, or bymarketing campaigns that portray fan loyalty as some sort of tribalwarfare, or by beer commercials that show crazy fans doing foolishstuff.”When they turn the cameras onto the fans during games,” Atlasasked, “why do they show the wildest ones behaving the way they do?Why doesn’t the league tell the networks to stop showing that?”Jed York, the 49ers owner, knows what’s at stake here. I amconvinced he wants to do the right thing, for both personal andbusiness reasons. But here’s my free public relations suggestion:To show people that Candlestick is safe, he and his family shouldleave their private box and sit in the stands for part of Saturdaynight’s game or the first regular season game.”Or how about this?” Atlas asked. “Maybe people should justbehave themselves.”That’s what scares me. More and more people think that the waythey behaved Saturday is exactly how they are expected to behave atNFL games. It’s what happens in low places. The league is trying tostop that. The league needs to try hard er.Mark Purdy is a San Jose Mercury News columnist.

UpdatedAug 24, 2011 4:40 AM ETST. LOUIS (AP)(Eds: With AP Photos.) St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is looking for one thing from Friday’s exhibition game at Kansas City.”Consistency,” said the first overall pick in the 2010 draft. ”One of the biggest things is we’ve got to be more consistent.”Bradford has excelled at times in helping the Rams to a 2-0 record this preseason. He has also struggled some, going 15 of 27 for 183 yards and two touchdown passes. He has thrown one interception and has an 85.9 quarterback rating.Bradford was 8 of 15 for 138 yards in a 17-16 win over Tennessee on Saturday, including an 83-yard scoring pass to Brandon Gibson on the first play from scrimmage. But the first team offense sputtered the rest of the half before exiting at the break. The struggles seemed to bother coach Steve Spagnuolo. The first unit had appeared sharp in a 33-10 win over Indianapolis on Aug. 13.That type of effort was missing on Saturday.”In order to be a good offense in this league, you’ve got to be able to put good plays together,” Bradford said. ”We’ve just got to get into our rhythm.”Bradford expects to play at least three quarters against Kansas City, in what is usually the most significant amount of playing time for starters before the regular season. Starters usually play just a series or two in the final exhibition game.So Bradford is hoping the offense will start rolling against Kansas City.”If you’re going to put together scoring drives, you’ve got to put together eight, 10, 12 plays in row,” Bradford said. The Rams are learning a more complex offense under new coordinator Josh McDaniels. Bradford has excelled during the crash course and says he’s learned more in the past few weeks under McDaniels than he had in his previous year in the league.St. Louis receiver Danny Amendola, who had a team-high 85 catches last season, likes the way Bradford is handling the new schemes.”He really seems to be getting a hold of this offense,” Amendola said. ”We all acknowledge him as our leader out there and he’s doing a good job.”Bradford, The AP Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, threw for 3,512 yards and 18 touchdowns in leading St. Louis to a 7-9 mark. He set a rookie record by throwing 169 successive passes without an interception.Notes: Tight end Michael Hoomanawanui has a strained calf muscle and will be out at least two weeks, according to Spagnuolo. …  Wide receiver Danario Alexander had an MRI on his left knee. There was no structural damage although there is some loose cartilage that will cause discomfort. Alexander says he will try and play through the injury.

UpdatedAug 24, 2011 6:26 AM ETFormer 49ers President Carmen Policyexpressed dismay and concern regarding the outbreak of violence atCandlestick Park, saying there has been “a deterioration in fanbehavior” since his days running the team.Policy, speaking at a City Club luncheon sponsored by TheChronicle, said the beatings and shootings during and afterSaturday’s preseason game between the Raiders and 49ers pose a serious risk to the NFLand its future success.”After Saturday, I heard so many people say, ‘I’m not bringingmy kids anymore,’ ” Policy said. “That’s horrible. That’s a realproblem for the NFL.”Policy, who is consulting for Lennar Corp. in its efforts tobuild a stadium for the 49ers at San Francisco’s HuntersPoint, said many fans simply will stay at home.”The stadiums are in competition with the NFL” telecasts, hesaid. “In some ways, it’s more comfortable to watch from home.
